Teach Siamsa was the first building dedicated to Siamsa Tire, in Finuge, which was opened to great fanfare in 1974.
In creating the first home for Siamsa Tíre, Fr Pat Ahern aimed to preserve traditional Irish culture in the areas of dance, music and song, especially those peculiar to the Kerry region (such as the Munnix style of dance) which were in danger of disappearing.
The Teach, built with huge involvement from the local community in Finuge, is based on the design of a traditional Irish cottage with a large performance space at its heart and an inglenook fire place. Teach Siamsa contains three additional smaller spaces suitable for small classes or workshops.
Teach Siamsa in Carraig (Teach Siamsa na Carraige) was built the following year (1975) in the heart of the West Kerry Gaeltacht. The design is identical to that of the Teach in Finuge. Refurbishments of both Tithe Siamsa were recently completed, funded under the ACCESS II funding scheme administered by the Department of Arts, Heritage & The Gaeltacht.
